Teaching an old Dog Mew Tricks

Dog training takes patience. Lots of it. Buckets of it. Yet there are few things better to see than a well behaved & trained dog. And, for me the person training the dog truly there are few things more rewarding.

One of my earliest stories for a magazine was on gundogs. Since then I have been fascinated to watch dogs work fields, picking up scents, traversing hedges, gates and water as they follow it.

We have rescue dogs - my brother (Brian) & Sarah a Boxer called Roxy, my mother a Labrador Retrieve called Foinn. They have both had some training & are well behaved but we need to keep working with them on a daily basis.

At the moment Brian is training Roxy to drop the ball after fetching it & to fetch from water namely the sea. Each week we see an improvement. But Roxy does have a mind of her own & constantly wants to hold the ball.

I caught these shots of the battle of wills on the beach at the weekend.

Hope you've had a great week. I've been writing to deadlines all week so I'm rather running to stand still just now.

Tell me what you've been up to?

That's it for now ...
