The Fitzwilliam Hotel's Perfect Canapes

A good hotel is an essential part of a writer's life.  It offers space - to think, hold meetings, write - not to mention, eat, sleep, sip cocktails and people watch. The Fitzwilliam Hotel, in Belfast is one of my favourite places in the city. Lastweek it celebrated its 5th with a casino party, complete with blackjack and roulette tables.  We joined about 100 people including That Belfast Girl to celebrate, with cocktails, chatter and canapes.

Oh the canapes.  They were just divine.

Perfectly bitesized canapes - fig with goat's cheese, fried risotto balls, caramelised red onion and blue cheese tarts, Bruschetta, duck egg, salmon parcels - that were both easy to eat whilst holding a drink, and chatting were delicious.

The canapes were timeless combinations of perfect flavour pairings.  Salty and sweet.  A range of textures and tastes.

For pudding there was a lemon meringue tart. Not much bigger than a 10 pence piece, this little delight, brought sharp lemon flavour, crisp pastry and just a hint of sweetness, in its little merginue hat, ever so sweetly decorated with raspberry dust.  Pastel marcoons, and bitter chocolate tarts, with a hint of orange filled the rest of the trays that waiters circled with.  A little bite of something was always on hand from warm team members.

One of the many things about the Fitzwilliam, that makes me smile is their attention to detail.  They get things 'just so' so the guest doesn't have to do the thinking and can just enjoy the experience.

Canapes for standing up parties need to be able to be eaten in a mouthful, or else the whole experience, chatting, eating, and drinking becomes unmanagable and rather ugly.  At the Fitzwilliam's birthday party the whole process was effortless.

It was lovely to catch up with some of the staff at the Fitzwilliam, and to be invited back to the restaurant to try their new menu, so watch this space.

Here at Salt & Sparkle we'd like to take this opportunity to wish the Fitzwilliam Hotel, Belfast, a very Happy Birthday.

That's it for now ...
